13 patients die in hospital fire in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Apr 23 (MNN) At least 13 patients were killed when a fire broke out at a private hospital treating coronavirus patients in Virar Hospital in Palghar district, near Mumbai, early Friday morning.

The blaze reported around 3 am in the Intensive Care Unit of Vijay Vallabh Hospital was later doused by the firefighters.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the fire accident.

Kovind tweeted that the news about the casualties was very saddening and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. Naidu tweeted that he was extremely grieved and wished speedy recovery to the injured patients.

Modi said he was sadness at the loss of lives at the COVID-19 hospital and hoped that the injured would recover soon.

Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 each for the seriously injured.

Rahul Gandhi said: “Tragic news received from Vijay Vallabh COVID centre in Virar about the death of patients due to a fire.
My deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I appeal to the state government and Congress workers to provide all necessary assistance.”
