Chandigarh, Apr 26 (MNN) The Punjab Cabinet on Monday approved the modalities for distribution of mobile phones to nearly 2.15 lakh students of Class 12 during the 2021-22 academic session to help their studies through e-learning in government schools amid Covid-19 pandemic.
A Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh at the Punjab Bhawan here this evening decided on the matter.
A budget of Rs 100 crore has been earmarked for the School Education Department under the ‘Punjab Smart Connect Scheme’ for 2021-22 fiscal.
As many as 1,75,443 regular students in Class 12 of government schools were given mobile phones last year. The scheme has now been extended to students to be admitted in Class 12 in the 2021-22 session.
The procurement would be done through Punjab Infotech, under the Industries and Commerce Department.
The mobile phones would have touch screens, cameras and pre-loaded government applications such as e-Sewa App with e-content related to Class 12, as approved by the School Education Department.
In order to speed up the process to fill nearly one lakh vacancies in various departments, boards, corporations, and agencies during 2020-2022, the Cabinet also gave post facto approval to amend Part-II B of the Punjab Public Service Commission (Limitation of Functions) Regulation, 1955, by putting these posts into the Commission’s purview.
