No one interested in renewed civil war in Afghanistan: Blinken

Washington, Apr 28 (MNN) The US said on Wednesday that as its troops were set to withdraw from Afghanistan by September, a civil war or a Taliban takeover was “certainly a possible scenario” but no stakeholder had an interest in renewed civil strife.

“Now, no one has an interest in renewed civil war in Afghanistan. Certainly, the Afghan people don’t. I don’t think ultimately either the Afghan government or the Taliban do. None of Afghanistan’s neighbours do…,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

He said that even as the US was withdrawing its forces, it was “not disengaging” from Afghanistan.

“We’re remaining deeply engaged in diplomacy, in support for the Afghan government and its people; development, economic and humanitarian assistance; support for the security forces…. But we have to plan. We are planning for every scenario.”

Blinken also asserted that President Biden had a profound commitment to restore the refugee programme not only to its historic levels but going beyond that and the US would be “making another announcement on the ceiling (on number of refugees to be let in) in the coming weeks”.
