Chandigarh, Apr 29 (MNN) A day after Punjab reported a record single-day 142 deaths due to coronavirus, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday demanded free vaccine for Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) beneficiaries in the 18-45 age group.
In a letter to Union Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar, the Chief Minister said that such an initiative would be a ‘progressive step’ towards covering industrial workers, as part of the Centre’s aim to vaccinate India’s adult population against Covid-19.
He said he was confident that his suggestion would be considered favourably in the larger public interest.
Citing medical experts, Amarinder Singh stressed that the vaccination can go a long way to arrest the virus transmission and also give protection to the vaccinated persons.
He pointed out that while the Centre would provide vaccine doses to all above the age of 45, those in the 18-45 age group would have to be given the jabs by the respective state governments and private agencies.
