Punjab procures 100.17 lakh tonne wheat, RBI extends CCL till May

Chandigarh, Apr 29 (MNN) Punjab has procured 100.17 lakh metric tonnes of wheat in the ongoing procurement season despite a surge in COVID pandemic.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu said that nearly 77 per cent of the total procurement had been done within 19 days of the commencement of the process from April 10.

Of the total estimated 130 LMT wheat expected to arrive in Punjab mandis, 101.86 LMT had already come during the ongoing Rabi Marketing Season (RMS), which is nearly 164 per cent more this year compared with corresponding period last year.

As much as 10.12 LMT wheat had arrived in Sangrur district markets, of which 10.04 LMT had been procured till April 28. After Sangrur, Ludhiana and Patiala led the districts with maximum arrivals at 8.25 LMT and 8.16 LMT respectively.

A total of 16.48 lakh passes have been issued to the farmers through arthiyas to ensure staggered movement of wheat in mandis and payments totalling Rs 15,500 crore made to 6,03,602 lakh farmers through DBT.

Wheat was sown on 35.1 lakh hectares in Punjab with a wheat production estimates of 177 LMT, of which 130 LMT would reach the grain markets during the ongoing procurement season.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India on Thursday extended the Cash Credit Limit (CCL) of Rs 2,953.46 crore for Punjab up to May 2021, for the ongoing wheat procurement season

With this, the sanctioned limit of Rs 21,658.73 crore for April-end has been increased to Rs 24,612.19 crore up to the end of May, an official spokesperson said.

The extension is subject to the state ensuring that the State Bank of India release the funds once Punjab government submits the Letter of Consent under Article 293 (3) of the Constitution of India, obtained from the Ministry of Finance, and subject to outstanding balance under all food credit accounts of the state government to be always backed by fully paid stock valued.

In Haryana, 82.72 lakh metric tonnes of wheat had arrived at 396 mandis and procurement centres, of which 79.09 lakh tonnes has been procured.
The government procured 78,230 tonnes of wheat on Thursday through various procurement agencies on Minimum Support Price.

Till date, 8,88,082 J-forms have been issued to 4,93,831 farmers and Rs 8,711 crore transferred directly to their accounts.

Officers concerned have been directed for daily lifting of procured wheat to ensure no pile-up of the crop in agricultural markets.
