India’s former Attorney General Sorabjee dies; PM and others condole

New Delhi, Apr 30 (MNN) Senior lawyer and former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee succumbed to coronavirus infection on Friday morning. He was 91.

A Padma Vibhushan awardee, Sorabjee was admitted at a private hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of the ace legal luminary: “Soli Sorabjee was an outstanding lawyer and intellectual. Through law, he was at the forefront of helping the poor and downtrodden. He will be remembered for his noteworthy tenures India’s Attorney General. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers.”

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said that it was a sad news and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted: “Heartfelt condolences on the passing of Soli Sorabjee — doyen of the bar; mentor to an entire generation of leading lights of the legal profession but above all else, a decent human being. My prayers are with his family at this tragic time.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted his condolences. “Anguished to learn about the passing away of Shri Soli Sorabjee, a noted jurist and former Attorney General of India. Sorabjee was a doyen of the legal fraternity, who will always be remembered for his contribution in the field of constitutional law. My condolences to his family.”

Former Union Law Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said: “The passing away of Mr Soli Sorabjee is a big loss to the world of law and justice. He will be remembered along with many illustrious judges who gave content and meaning to the promise of the Constitution of India to build a just, fair and equal society.

“My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the innumerable young lawyers that Mr Sorabjee mentored and groomed.”

Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan said: “Soli Sorabjee, a legal giant of our time passed away today, after some days in hospital due to Covid. He was a good friend and very affectionate.” He tagged along a photo with his tweet to tell it was taken when he and his father visited Sorabjee four months back.
