Kandy (Sri Lanka), May 3 (MNN) Riding the 10-wicket haul by debutant Praveen Jayawickrama, Sri Lanka on Monday thrashed Bangladesh by 209 runs in the second Test match at Pallekele cricket ground to clinch the 2-match series 1-0.

Left-arm leg spinner Jayawickrama was the pick of the Lankan bowlers, with impressive bowling figures of 11 for 178.

He is the first Sri Lankan to claim a 10-wicket haul on debut and the first bowler to take a 10-wicket haul on debut since Australia’s Jason Krejza.

He is also the first bowler since Indian spin master Narendra Hirwani in 1988 to pick up two five-wicket hauls in his debut match.

The day began with Bangladesh resuming their innings at 177/5, with Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan trying to stave off a defeat in the middle.

Bangladesh’s hopes of chasing the Lankan score suffered an early blow as Liton was trapped lbw by Jayawickrama in his only second over of the day.

Needing 254 runs to win, Mehidy Hasan continued his efforts for Bangladesh but didn’t get enough support from the other end of the crease.

Later, Dhananjaya de Silva sent Taijul Islam back to the pavilion for two, finding Dickwella behind the stumps.

Ramesh Mendis added to Bangladesh’s cup of woes as he claimed the scalp of Taskin Ahmed.

Jayawickrama’s coup de grace for Bangladesh was the wickets of Mehidy Hasan and Abu Jayed in one over, taking his total wicket tally in the match to 11. Mushfiqur Rahim top scored in the second innings for Bangladesh.

Jayawickrama was adjudged the Player of the Match while Dimuth Karunaratne was named the Player of the Series. The first match was a high-scoring draw.
