Punjab sets up centre to monitor Remdesivir supply

Chandigarh, May 8 (MNN) The Punjab government has set up a centre to monitor the supply of Remdesivir injections to stop its black marketing.

Expressing grave concern over black marketing and hoarding of drugs used to treat COVID-19, Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu said that he directed the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take stringent action against wholesalers, distributors and retailers found indulging in such activities.

He urged the people not to panic to buy Remdesivir at high prices as the Health Department had sufficient stocks.

While the government of India had allocated 50,000 injections for distribution in Punjab from April 21 to May 9, the state had received only 41,056 injections. Punjab will receive another 35,000 Remdesivir injections from May 9 to 16.

A total of 20,450 injections were distributed to government COVID Care Centres and Government Medical Colleges and another 20,606 to private CCCs.

The state government had constantly ensured the supply, availability and distribution of the injections at government and private hospitals across the state, Sidhu added.

The Minister said that mention of the name of patients and IPD numbers on the vials had been made mandatory so that FDA’s teams can easily verify empty vials to know which patient had been administered the drug before it was destroyed by Covid Care Centres.

A total of 60 Drug Control Officers have been deputed to keep a vigilant eye on the supply of medicines across Punjab.

Sidhu said that he had also instructed the FDA to monitor the prices and stocks of Covid related/management drugs across the state and act promptly against those violating official guidelines.

He said that Remdesivir injection was required to be sold for use only to hospitals/institutions and patients under medical prescription only to ensure its proper use.

Accordingly, all dealers/stockiest shall be directed to maintain stocks and keep a stringent control over distribution, the Minister added.
