New Delhi, May 13 (MNN) The Election Commission of India on Thursday said it had deferred the biennial elections to elect three members of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council and six members of Telangana Legislative Council who terms are expiring on May 31 and June 3 respectively.

The new MLCs were to be elected by the members of their respective Assemblies (MLAs) before the end of their terms.

The Commission said it had reviewed the matter during the day and decided that due to the second wave of COVID-19 in the country, it would not be appropriate to hold biennial election to the Legislative Councils of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana respectively till the situation significantly improved and conditions become conducive to hold these biennial elections.

The Commission will take a decision in the matter at an appropriate time after taking inputs from the concerned states and assessing the pandemic situation from mandated authorities like the NDMA/SDMA.
