Thunderstorm, wind, rough sea conditions: IMD issues weather warning for five days

New Delhi, May 14 (MNN) With the monsoon knocking at the subcontinent’s doors, the IMD issued a weather warning for five days from on Friday, predicting thunderstorm and winds at different places across India.

Fishermen were advised not to venture out to sea as the weather conditions over southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep-Maldives area and equatorial Indian Ocean was expected to be rough to very rough on Friday.

On Friday, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places over the Gangetic West Bengal; with lightning and gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) at isolated places over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Sikkim, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan and Goa, Telangana, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep.

Thunderstorm with lightning was also predicted at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema and Interior Karnataka, the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Heavy to very heavy rain was very likely to occur at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over Lakshadweep and Kerala and Mahe; heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over coastal and south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and heavy rain very likely at isolated places over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, the weatherman said.
During the day, squally weather (wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) was also very likely to be recorded over southwest and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean, Maldives, Comorin and Lakshadweep area and along and off the Kerala coast.

On Saturday, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) was very likely to occur at isolated places over Jharkhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Gujarat state, Konkan and Goa, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep; with lightning at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Konkan and Goa.

Heavy to very heavy rain was very likely at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over coastal and south interior Karnataka and Kerala and Mahe; heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rain was likely at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and Lakshadweep whereas heavy rain was likely at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra (ghat areas), Konkan and Goa, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema and north interior Karnataka.

Squally wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph was very likely over southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep – Maldives area and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean and also along and off Kerala-Karnataka coasts.

Sea condition over east-central Arabian Sea will be very rough to high. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.
Tidal wave Warning: Tidal wave of about one metre height above the astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low-lying areas of Lakshadweep Islands on May 15 and 16.

On May 16, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40) was likely at isolated places over Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Rayalaseema, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep; with lightning at isolated places over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely at a few places over Konkan and Goa and south interior Karnataka; heavy to very heavy rain was likely at isolated places in Madhya Maharashtra (ghat areas), coastal & north interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep wheras heavy rain was expected at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and Rayalaseema.

Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph are likely over east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area.

Gale winds with speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph along and off the Kerala-Karnataka coasts are also likely to occur.
Wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph along and off south Maharashtra–Goa coasts is predicted on May 16.

Squally Weather (wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60kmph) are also very likely over southwest and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean.

Sea conditions are predicted to be high to very high over northeast Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

Tidal waves of about one metre height above the astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Lakshadweep Islands on May 15 and 16.

On May 17, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) are likely at isolated places over Gujarat region, Telangana, Rayalaseema, coastal and north interior Karnataka, Kerala abnd Mahe and Lakshadweep; with lightning at isolated places over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
