Count teachers who died on UP poll duty, compensate kin with Rs one crore each: SP

Lucknow, May 19 (MNN) Amid a controversy over the death of teachers put on duty during Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections, the Samajwadi Party on Wednesday demanded a death count under court supervision and Rs one crore each be given to the bereaved families.

While a union of teachers asserted that 1,621 teachers, including 440 women, had died during local elections, the state Basic Education Department maintained that the actual figure was only three.

“After killing thousands of teachers due to mismanagement in panchayat elections, the murderer BJP is now rubbing salt on the wounds of the bereaved families rather than sympathise with them by claiming that only three deaths had occurred. There should be a count of the dead teachers under court supervision and each bereaved family should be given Rs one crore as compensation,” the opposition party tweeted.
