Chandigarh, May 24 (MNN) After Moderna, another coronavirus vaccine manufacturer Pfizer too has refused to directly supply vaccines to Punjab since the firm only deals with national governments, state Nodal Officer for vaccinations Vikas Garg said on Monday.
He said that now the state is hoping for a positive reply on Sputnik V and Johnson and Johnson.
Pfizer in its communication to the state government said that it is working with federal governments across the world to supply Covid-19 vaccine for use in national immunization programmes, the senior IAS officer said.
“Our supply agreements at this time are with national governments and supra-national organisations with allocation of doses and implementation within the country a decision that governments take based on relevant health authority guidance. This approach Pfizer has followed across the world,” the firm said.
The Nodal Officer said that all corona vaccine manufacturers were approached for direct purchase, like Sputnik V, Pfizer, Modern, and Johnson and Johnson, as per Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s directions to explore the possibilities of floating a global tender for the procurement of vaccines from all possible sources to ensure early inoculation in Punjab.
The state was forced to stop vaccinations in Phase I and 2 beneficiaries in the last three days because of non-availability of vaccines.
Punjab has so far received about 45.3 lakh vaccine doses from the Indian government.
