Chandigarh, May 29 (MNN) Two of the main accused in the sensational killing of CIA Assistant Sub- Inspectors Bhagwan Singh and Dalwinderjit Singh in Jagraon grain market on May 15 have been arrested, DGP Dinkar Gupta said on Saturday.

Suspects Baljinder Singh alias Babbi of Mahla Khurd village in Moga district and Darshan Singh of Sahauli village in Ludhiana district — carrying rewards of Rs two lakh each – are accomplices of gangster and drug smuggler Jaipal Bhullar, police claimed.

Both were arrested from Dabra in Gwalior district in Madhya Pradesh on Friday evening.

Another suspect Harcharan Singh was arrested for sheltering them, DGP Gupta said.

Their preliminary questioning revealed that Baljinder had gone to the grain market in his Canter vehicle to providing safe transport to Jaipal and Jassi to hide outside the state. Darshan met them at the spot along with some clothes for the gangster and his accomplices.

Gupta said that the two ASIs on duty got suspicious after seeing some drugs in the Canter and confronted the driver.

Apparently cornered, Darshan opened fire at the two ASIs from his .32-bore revolver and fled the scene, along with Jaipal and Jassi, in their car, the DGP said.

Babbi fled in the Canter and joined them later on, following which they all fled towards Haryana and Rajasthan.

A team from the Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU), led by Inspector Pushpinder Singh, managed to track the two suspects and arrested them from Dabra railway station near Gwalior while they were planning to board a train to Maharashtra.

Gupta said the duo has a criminal past and both had been convicted in two murder cases earlier.

While Darshan was granted remission while undergoing his jail sentence, Baljinder was released on bail by the High court after his conviction by the Sessions court at Moga.

Darshan is said to have two more criminal cases registered against him and was also involved in smuggling of opium.

The DGP said Jaipal remains at large, even as his close associate Gavi was arrested by Punjab Police from Jamshedpur last month.

Both Jaipal and Gavi have close links with drug smugglers based in Pakistan and Jammu.

Gupta said a manhunt is on for the absconding suspects.

He said rewards of Rs 10 lakh and Rs five lakh have been announced for the arrest of Jaipal Bhullar and Jaspreet alias Jassi Baba respectively.
