Doha, June 4 (MNN) Indian men’s football team went down 0-1 to Asian champions Qatar in a joint qualifying tournament for the 2023 Asian Cup and the 2022 World Cup at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium here on Thursday.
Qatar’s Abdel Aziz scored in the 33rd minute in a match completely dominated by the Qataris. The two sides had played out a goalless draw in their first leg match here in September 2019.
India played with 10 men from the 17th minute onwards after defender Rahul Bheke was red carded after a second booking. He had earlier received a yellow card in the ninth minute.
While the hopes of qualifying for the World Cup are over, India are still in the running for the Asian Cup qualification.
A third-place finish in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers will earn them direct entry into the Asian Cup though a fourth-place finish could also be enough.
The remaining two matches of the campaign therefore hold huge importance for the team.
India are next set to face Bangladesh on June 7 before taking on Afghanistan in their final qualifier on June 15 at the same venue.
The video of the players thanking the fans was posted on social media late in the night and is winning the hearts of the public.
