New Delhi, June 4 (MNN) Olympic-bound Indian wrestler Sumit Malik has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect by the United World Wrestling (UWW) after failing a dope test during the recent qualifiers in Bulgaria.
The result of his ‘B’ sample test is still pending. Malik can be banned from wrestling if his B sample also returns positive later this month.
Eight Indian wrestlers, four men and four women, have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, which begin on July 23.
Malik, the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, made the cut for the Tokyo Games in the 125kg category last month.
He was the fourth Indian freestyle wrestler to make it to the 2021 Games after Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Bajrang Punia (65kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg).
The 28-year-old Malik has been nursing a knee injury he suffered during the national camp before the Olympic Qualifiers began at different venues.
