Chandigarh, June 19 (MNN) The Punjab government said on Saturday that late Indian athletics icon Milkha Singh would be given a state funeral in the evening and a state mourning would be observed for a day as a mark of respect to the Padma Shri awardee.
“Have directed that late Milkha Singh Ji will be given a State Funeral by our government. Also, Punjab will observe one day of state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed legend,” Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted on Saturday.
Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh had lost the battle to coronavirus complications here late on Friday night. He was 91.
The Flying Sikh was admitted in the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Research here for treatment on June 3 after he had tested positive for coronavirus in May. The end came around 11.25 pm.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many other prominent personalities had paid rich tributes to the Indian athletics’ icon.
Earlier, the Chief Minister had tweeted: “Upset and saddened to hear of Milkha Singh Ji’s demise. It marks the end of an era and India and Punjab are poorer today. My condolences to the bereaved family and millions of fans. The legend of the Flying Sikh will reverberate for generations to come. Rest in peace Sir!”
Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said he would attend the funeral of the late athlete in Chandigarh on Saturday evening.
“I’m leaving for Chandigarh to attend the funeral of Milkha Singh Ji. I’m carrying the message of Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji for the family and will pay my tribute to the pride of India, the legendary Flying Sikh,” he tweeted.
On June 13, Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal too had passed away at a private hospital in SAS Nagar adjoining Chandigarh after battling COVID-19.
The couple are now survived by a son and three daughters. Their son Jeev Milkha Singh is an international golfer.
