New Delhi, June 24 (MNN) Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday asked her party leaders to actively ensure full vaccination coverage against coronavirus across the country.
“It is absolutely essential that our party plays an active role in ensuring full vaccination coverage. At the national level, the daily rate of vaccinations has to treble so that 75 per cent of our population gets fully vaccinated by end of this year. No doubt, this is dependent entirely on the adequacy of vaccine supply,” she told a meeting of Congress General Secretaries and incharges of party affairs in different states.
She also said that the opposition party must continue to put pressure on the Indian government on the vaccination front which, she pointed out, had taken up the responsibility after Congress insistence.
Sonia also asked party leaders to ensure registrations for vaccination drive, take steps to overcome vaccine hesitancy among people and minimised vaccine wastage.
The Congress also needed to pay urgent attention to the possibility of third wave of the pandemic and its likely effect on children.
“We must take proactive measures so that they are spared this calamity. We have to take steps to be better prepared if and when it strikes.”
She also appreciated Congress leaders and workers who had been in the forefront of providing relief to the needy people due to rising prices of fuel, essential commodities amid lost jobs and economic downturn.
“The Youth Congress deservedly drew support for its outreach but there are Congressmen and Congresswomen across the country who have engaged in relief activities. That is the Congress’ finest tradition of community service. We must continue our efforts,” the Congress chief said.
