London, July 3 (MNN) After stunning performance in the first round by India’s Sania Mirza and her US partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands, the pair went down fighting in the second round at the Wimbledon against the Russian pair of Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova here on Saturday.
Sania — competing at the Wimbledon after 2017 — teamed up with Bethanie once again for an epic match but was beaten in straight-sets 6-4, 6-3 in their second-round encounter on Court 8.
In the first round, the pair had stunned sixth-seeded Alexa Guarachi of Chile and Desirae Krawczyk of the US with straight-sets win.
Sania, winner of three Grand Slam doubles titles and as many mixed doubles titles thus far, last won the Wimbledon ladies’ doubles title in 2015.
Later on the day, Sania along with her Indian pair Rohan Bopanna will face the French pair of Nicolas Mahut and Kristina Mladenovic in round two for the mixed doubles at the Wimbledon.
In another mixed doubles match India’s Divij Sharan will pair up with Samantha Murray Sharan of Britain against tenth-seeded Croatian Darija Jurak and Raven Klaasen of South Africa.
