India’s challenge ends at Wimbledon as Sania-Bopanna pair ousted

London, July 6 (MNN)  India’s Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna’s quest to reach the Wimbledon’s mixed doubles quarter-finals was shattered by the pair of Slovenian Andreja Klepac and Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer in their round of 16 match here.

With this defeat India’s challenge has ended at the Wimbledon.

The Indian duo went down fighting 3-6, 6-3, 9-11 in the third round on Wednesday. The match was in continuation of the July 7 encounter which was left at 3-6 due to rain.

Earlier, in their second-round match, the Indians had registered a 6-3, 6-1 win whereas in the first round they overcame compatriots Ankita Raina and Ramkumar Ramanathan in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(5).

Sania Mirza and her US partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands defeated sixth-seeded Alexa Guarachi of Chile and Desirae Krawczyk of the US in the women’s doubles first round with a straight-sets win, but went down fighting in the second round against Russian pair Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-3.

The Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan have also been knocked out of the first round of Wimbledon’s men’s doubles after a 6-7(6), 4-6 loss to 13th seed Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France and Finnish Henri Kontinen.

It was Mirza’s last tournament before the Tokyo Games where she will compete in the women’s doubles with Ankita Raina.
