Chandigarh, July 13 (MNN) The Haryana government has decided to postpone the 2021 edition of Khelo India Youth Games as a precautionary measure against a possible third wave of COVID-19.
The event, which was scheduled to take place in November in Ambala, Chandigarh, Delhi, Panchkula and Shahbad, will now take place in February 2022.
The decision was taken in a meeting of organising-cum-coordination committee held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
The CM cited the warnings of the Director of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi and other healthcare experts, who have cautioned of a third wave of COVID-19 in the country in October-November 2021.
Khattar also asked for holding talks with Indian Sports Minister Anurag Thakur about hosting some events of the games in Himachal Pradesh.
The fourth edition of the youth championships will be held in the under-18 age group and will involve 25 sports competitions, including five indigenous games.
Around 8,500 players are expected to participate in the competition.
The last edition of the Khelo India Youth Games was held in Guwahati, Assam in January 2020.
Haryana won the inaugural edition of the Khelo India Youth Games in 2018 and finished runner-up behind Maharashtra last year.
