Chandigarh, July 13 (MNN) Cooperative sugar mills in Punjab on Tuesday released Rs 45 crore as dues for 2020-21 to cane growers, Cooperation and Jails Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said.

“This is despite the fact that the Indian government is still withholding export subsidy and buffer stock subsidy of Rs 11.57 crore of sugar mills pertaining to 2019-20 fiscal, Randhawa claimed, adding that the state is approaching the Centre to ensure said subsidy amount was cleared.

The Minister claimed that the Punjab government was fully committed to farmers’ welfare, which was clear from the fact that a budgetary provision of Rs 300 crore had been made during 2021-22 to clear pending dues.

Randhawa said that the state had undertaken steps to increase income of cane growers and provided them 16 lakh saplings of high-yielding cane varieties for sowing.

These were developed with the active assistance of Punjab Agriculture University at Ludhiana and Centre of Indian Council of Agricultural Research at Karnal.

“This will not only increase the per acre yield of cane but also increase income of cane growers. Guru Nanak Dev Sugarcane Research and Development Centre has been set up at Kalanaur in Gurdaspur district and cane seeds prepared in 15-acre seed farm,” the Minister said.
