Colombo, July 18 (MNN) A captain’s knock of 86 not out in 95 balls by Shikhar Dhawan steered India to a win by seven wickets in their first One-Day International against Sri Lanka here on Sunday.

Set a target of 263 to win by the hosts, the visitors achieved it with seven wickets to spare in 36.4 overs.

While Prithvi Shaw made 43 off 24 balls before he was caught by Avishka Fernando off the bowling of Dhananjaya de Silva, Ishan Kishan made 59 off 42 balls. He was caught by Minod Bhanuka on a Lakshan Sandakan delivery.

Manish Pandey contributed 26 runs whereas Suryakumar Yadav was unbeated on 31 off 20 balls.

As India began their run chase, Shaw looked unstoppable with his blistering innings as India reached 58 in just 5.3 overs. After his departure, debutant wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan hit a six on his very first ball as he faced de Silva. Soon, Indian skipper Dhawan took the innings to 143 with his 59 off 42 balls.

After Kishan’s departure Dhawan amassed 86 off 95 balls to enable India overhaul the 262 run target with 13.2 overs to spare.

The spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Krunal Pandya shared five wickets between them and bowled tidy spells. Deepak Chahar too picked up a couple of wickets while Hardik too got a wicket to his name.

Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka offered some resistance to Indian bowlers and scored 39 off 50 balls. After his fall, Dushmantha Chameera and Chamika Karunaratne helped the hosts recover and get to a respectable total of 262 for 9 in their 50 overs.

They collected 32 runs in the final two overs from Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Eventually batting at number eight, Chamika Karunaratne top-scored with 43 off 35 balls.

This match saw three debutants — Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan from India and Bhanuka Rajapaksa from Sri lanka.

Both teams will next meet on July 20 for the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
