Van Horn (Texas), July 20 (MNN) Billionaire Jeff Bezos and three other crew successfully completed a historic suborbital flight here on Tuesday.
The four took off aboard the world’s richest man’s space project Blue Origin’s ‘New Shepard’ launch vehicle, which was broadcast live on its website and returned safely to Earth, an over 10 minute suborbital flight that soared over 3,51,000 feet above the Texas desert.
New Shepard went over the ‘Kármán line’ 100 km above earth, which was defined as the point of end of planet’s atmosphere and start of space in the 1960s by Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, an international record-keeping body for aeronautic..
The Blue Origin booster is reusable and few twice into space in the past. It landed back at the designated place in over 7 minutes into the space journey.
Apart from Bezos, who is the founder of ecommerce company Amazon.com Inc and his brother Mark, female aviator Wally Funk, aged 82, and Oliver Daemen, aged 18, accompanied him.
Bezos’ historic flight comes nine days after British billionaire Richard Branson completed his suborbital journey on Virgin Galactic’s inaugural flight from New Mexico.
Interestingly, US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. New Shepard is named after Alan Shepard, who was the first US citizen to travel in space in 1961.
“Congratulations to all of Team Blue past and present on reaching this historic moment in spaceflight history. This first astronaut crew wrote themselves into the history books of space, opening the door through which many after will pass,” Blue Origin posted on its Twitter handle.
