New Delhi, July 20 (MNN) In a repeat of the opening day of the Monsoon Session, both Houses of Parliament saw several adjournments since Tuesday morning as the Opposition remained adamant on discussions on their demands.
While the Rajya Sabha was first adjourned till noon, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm. Later, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till July 22.
When the Rajya Sabha again met at noon, the opposition members continued to protest, forcing the adjournment of the House till 1 pm. Around 1.15 pm, the Deputy Chair of the Upper House again adjourned the proceedings for 15 minutes amid opposition din.
When the Rajya Sabha convened around 1.30 pm, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge spoke on coronavirus pandemic, and said the government had failed on this front.
He also disputed the official death toll due to the virus across the country while raising the issue of shortage of medical oxygen and drugs.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal appealed to the members not to pull each other down and instead raise the level of debate in the Upper House.
Dr Santanu Sen of the AITC briefly raised the Pegasus spyware issue before he spoke on the coronavirus pandemic.
In the morning. the opposition members kept demanding adjournment of Zero Hour and discussion on fuel price hike, three central farm laws amid Congress contention that it will raise the Pegasus snooping issue in both Houses of Parliament.
Earlier, when the Rajya Sabha met at 1 pm, opposition members had created a din even as Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Rai Singh, who was presiding over the proceedings, appealed to them to maintain peace.
Several members even trooped to the Well of the House and shouted slogans like ‘we want justice’ while displaying placards on their demands.
Amid the ruckus, the Deputy Chairpersons called on members to participate in a short duration discussion on coronavirus pandemic. Nominated member Swapan Dasgupta began speaking, but what he said was drowned in the din caused by protesting members. Nevertheless, he continued to speak.
Around 1.15 pm, the Deputy Chairperson ordered for the adjournment of the House for 15 minutes.
On Monday, the Monsoon Session had got off to a tumultuous start as the opposition created a ruckus regarding their demands, forcing the presiding officers of both Houses to adjourn the proceedings several times — first till 2 pm and finally till 11 am on Tuesday.
The Rajya Sabha was first adjourned till 3 pm, but later to 11 am on July 20. The Lok Sabha too met briefly after it was adjourned till 3.30 pm, but finally to Tuesday morning.
Speaking outside Parliament on Tuesday, Congress leader Shakti Sinh Gohil maintained that the Modi government should order a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe since the Pegasus misuse was a serious issue.
He said that nearly 15 notices had been given by opposition parties for suspension of House business and discussion on various issues of national importance.
