Tokyo, July 24 (MNN) Serbian Novak Djokovic beat Bolivian Hugo Dellien in the first round match of the men’s singles to kick off his bid for a gold on Day 1 of the Tokyo Olympics here.

Djokovic took down world ranked 139 Dellien 6-2, 6-2 and moved easily into the second round.

The world number 1 last week confirmed his participation at the Games.

The 34-year-old has already won the Australian and French Open this year as well as the Wimbledon title last month to claim his 20th career Grand Slam title.

However, if he wins the men’s title in Tokyo, which gets underway at the Ariake Tennis Park on July 24, and the US Open in September, he will make history as the first male player to have achieved the feat.

Steffi Graff is the only player to have won all five titles in the same year — 1988.

This is the best opportunity for Djokovic as the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, and Nick Kyrgios, among other the top men’s players, have pulled out of Tokyo Games due to COVID-19 coupled with a busy tennis schedule after French Open and Wimbledon.

In the second round, the world number one will face the German Jan-Lennard Struff, striker of the Brazilian Monteiro.
