Kinnaur, July 25 (MNN) At least nine persons were killed and three others injured on Sunday due to a landslide in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
The mishap occurred around a bridge near Gunsa in Batseri area, wherein huge boulders rolled down a hilltop on the bridge as well as houses and parked cars at the foothill. One boulder hit the bridge, leading to its collapse into the Bapsa river flowing below.
After the boulders hit a Tempo Traveller, people of Batseri village reached the spot and started rescue work. The villagers also informed the police and district administration about the mishap.
Four of the deceased hailed from Rajasthan, including three members of family from Sikar and a girl from Jaipur. Those dead were identified as Maya Devi of Madhoganj in Sikar, her son Anurag and daughter Richa and one Deepa Sharma Mansarovar.
Himachal Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said the mishap that occurred due to the landslide in Batseri in Kinnaur was heart-rending. The news of death of nine persons and injuries to two others riding a tourist bus and injuries to a passerby is extremely saddening,” he tweeted.
He said that he had sought information on the natural calamity from the district administration and issued necessary directions. The authorities are undertaking relief and recue operation, the Chief Minister said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too grieved the dead and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He said that the treatment of the injured would be ensured and that he wished them recovery soon.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that he was saddened to know that many lives have been lost in a bridge collapse in Sangal Valley in Kinnaur.
“My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May they remain strong in this difficult time. Prayers for speedy recovery of those injured.”
