Melbourne, Nov 26 (MNN) As Pat Cummins was confirmed as the Australia Test team captain, he received support from Tim Paine’s wife Bonnie, a news report said on Friday.
Bonnie shared a post on her Instagram account on Friday afternoon: “@patcummins30 two of your biggest supporters over here. The post had a heart emoji.
Cummins was officially named Australia’s 47th Test captain, the first fast bowler since Ray Lindwall to captain Australia more than 65 years ago.
Cummins got to lead the Test team after Paine quit after his sexting scandal became public last week. Steve Smith will be his vice-captain.
Earlier this week, news.com.au reported, 45 per cent of over 1,00,000 of its readers polled believed that Smith should take over as skipper, compared with 34 per cent who favoured Cummins.
Cummins told the media that Paine’s decision to relinquish captaincy was owing to his selfless leadership skills. “When I spoke to (Paine) this morning, he wanted to make it really clear that part of his decision of taking a break was that he didn’t want (the sexting scandal) to be a distraction,” he said.
Cummins and Steve Smith maintained that Paine had lost none of the admiration of his peers. “We really feel for Tim and his family. He’s just a really loved, well-respected leader of our team,” Cummins said.
