AAP will eradicate drug menace from Punjab in six months, promises Kejriwal

Gurdaspur, Dec 24 (MNN) As drug smuggling returns to political debate in Punjab ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday promised that his AAP will eradicate the menace from the northern state in six months after coming to power.

Flaying the ruling Congress, Kejriwal said: “During the 2017 elections, Congress leaders pledged to eradicate drug menace in Punjab. Were they able to eradicate addiction from Punjab’s villages, from the lives of Punjab’s youths? It has rather been on the rise.

“All that the Congress government has done in five years is registering an FIR against one single person… and both Charanjit Singh Channi and Navjot Singh Sidhu are boasting about it as if they have eradicated the problem from the state. Does the problem end with one FIR? It is merely an election gimmick and a betrayal of the public trust,” the Aam Aadmi Party leader said at a public rally here.

He also said that the AAP government will put an end to sacrilege incidents and punish all masterminds and conspirators who are hell-bent on disrupting peace in Punjab.

“It is deeply tragic that a blast occurred in Ludhiana yesterday. It is a very unfortunate incident… a few days ago, sacrilege was reported in Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar. We suspect such occurrences right before the Assembly elections could be due to a conspiracy and deliberately done to disturb Punjab’s peace.

“Ahead of the 2017 elections too, a bomb blast was reported in Maur. In 2015, sacrilege incidents were reported in Bargari and other places. People behind such incidents should be identified, arrested and punished immediately.”

AAP will take steps to strengthen security, promote brotherhood in Punjab, end corruption in police, strengthen border security to prevent entry of terrorists and drugs, he assured his audience.

The Delhi Chief Minister also promised that all cases of sacrilege and blasts in Punjab will be probed and masterminds jailed to make sure no recurrence in future, adding that more police force will be deployed in religious places.

During his Punjab visit during the day, Kejriwal also attended Christmas festivities in Dhariwal town in Gurdaspur district, and spoke on the importance of teachings of Jesus Christ.
